Most people will answer this with some brand and model of firearm. And firearms are good and certainly very important, but I can think of several weapons that are actually "better" in sense that they're more likely to have the desired effect: repelling hostile intruders and protecting your family.

A good, loyal dog with a commanding presence is actually the very best home defense weapon you could possibly have. Our four-year old German Shepherd, a total cream-puff with us, can look very threatening when he's alerted to something. And he constantly looks at me for clues; a mere widening of my eyes can set him after someone with extreme aggressiveness. Usually, if would-be ne're-do-wells just hear a large dog barking on alert, they'll slink away in search of easier prey.

But if you can't get a dawg, get a Mossberg 12 ga. shotgun with 00 buck shells. Chink-chink, mo-fo.

Never underestimate the power of sound.  A commanding voice, whether yours or a dogs can go a long way.  Not to mention the unmistakable sound of a pump shotgun chambering a round.  It does get the badguys' attention.  But I guess the most valuable weapon one can use is right there between one's ears.
